  Joinpoint Trends - Differences
The trends in reported cancer rates for selected racial groups for specified time periods are summarized by the annual percent changes associated with each line segment obtained from fitting a joinpoint regression model to cancer rates for a time period in question. Because we do not have enough information to compute cancer rates for the same calendar years for all racial groups, the joinpoint regression models use the most data available for each group. As a result of the differences in the time periods used to fit the models, the annual percent changes estimated using the shorter series will be subject to more variability than the ones using the longer series. Although the annual percent changes from two series estimated using different time periods are not technically comparable, these results can be useful to provide an approximate summary of the trends for practical purposes. To learn more about fitting trends using joinpoint models see https://webarchive.library.unt.edu/eot2008/20090130221620/http://srab.cancer.gov/joinpoint.

Unless stated below, the recent trend for All Races, Whites and Blacks is computed using 1980-2004 data. Unless stated below, the recent trend for American-Indians/Alaskan Natives, Asian Pacific Islanders and Hispanics is computed using 1990-2004 data (due to data availability).

Due to counties changing over time or data availability, the following states/counties use a different time period to fit the model.

  • The following counties only use the last 10 years in their joinpoint computation for All Races, Whites, Blacks, American-Indians/Alaskan Natives, Asian Pacific Islanders and Hispanics:
    Using 1995-2005:
    Aleutians East Borough, AK
    Aleutians West Census Area, AK
