Herger Discusses Opposition to New Iraq Spending Measure

(Washington, DC) - Congressman Wally Herger today voted against H.R. 2206, legislation that would provide funding for our troops through July 2007, but would require another vote in July to determine whether Congress would fund our troops for the remainder of the fiscal year (which ends on September 30).  Herger made the following comment regarding his opposition to the measure:

"This legislation would give a clear signal to al Qaeda and other enemies in Iraq that if they continue their barbaric attacks for just a few months, the new majority in Congress is prepared to cut off funding for our troops," Herger stated.  "It effectively establishes an arbitrary deadline that al Qaeda would certainly exploit.  This bill has no chance of becoming law.  I urge congressional leaders to work with the Administration to fully fund our troops in a way that does not micromanage our commanders and play into the hands of our enemies."
