Developmental Biology of the Islet

The Developmental Biology program encompasses research on the basic mechanisms underlying organogenesis and regeneration in normal development and disease. Specific areas of support include:

  • Developmental genetic screens for identifying mutations that effect the formation of tissue such as bone, adipose, endocrine pancreas or pituitary
  • Signals, signaling pathway components and transcriptional factors that control the fate, specification, proliferation, and differentiation of cells in the formation of tissues and organs
  • Mechanisms of islet cell proliferation, differentiation, and survival
  • Deriving pancreatic islets from stem/precursor cells
  • Animal models of islet regeneration and neogenesis
