Mass Layoffs (Monthly)

In December, there were 2,275 mass layoff actions, involving 226,117 workers. Mass layoff events decreased by 58 over the month, while initial claims increased slightly by 478. Over the year, mass layoff events increased by 806, and initial claims increased by 80,201. Layoff activity in manufacturing rose for the fifth consecutive month. Full Text »

Union Membership (Annual)

In 2008, union members accounted for 12.4 percent of employed wage and salary workers, up from 12.1 percent a year earlier. The number of workers belonging to a union rose by 428,000 to 16.1 million. When the series began in 1983, the union membership rate was 20.1 percent, and there were 17.7 million union workers. Full Text »
