ALERT SERVICES
Staying Current with the Literature

Alerts help you save time and stay current with topics that matter to you. A database can automatically search for articles pertaining to topics related to your interests and regularly email citations and abstracts to you. You can also stay informed about who is citing your work or any articles of interest.

Many of the resources offered by the Library allow you to set up alerts that can be emailed directly to you. Depending upon the resource, alerts can be set up for either searches or cited references. The following are a few resources with alert features:

EMBASE

Register to save searches from international literature in biomedicine and pharmacology. Alerts are emailed weekly.

MyNCBI
via PubMed

Register to save PubMed searches and article citations, set search filters and document delivery settings, and specify other settings. Alerts can be emailed daily, weekly, or monthly.

Ovid

Choose to connect to an Ovid database (AGRICOLA, MEDLINE, HAPI, PsycINFO) and register for a Personal Account. This account allows you to save searches and have results regularly emailed to you. Frequency varies by database.

ScienceDirect

Register to save searches from scientific literature published by Elsevier. Citation alerts are also available. All alerts may be emailed weekly or monthly. Table of contents for journals may also be emailed as issues are published.

Scopus

Uses the same registration as ScienceDirect. Register to save searches from research literature and set alerts. Citation alerts are also available. All alerts may be emailed daily, weekly, or monthly.

Web of Knowledge

Register to save Biological Abstracts and Web of Science searches for articles and cited references. Alerts are emailed weekly.

Electronic Journals

Many electronic journals will allow you to be notified via email when a new issue is available and receive tables of contents. You will need to register with each journal provider.

Help with Alerts: A librarian can work with you (or for you) to complete an initial search from the database of your choice to make sure that the search is finding what you want. She can also help you in setting up your accounts or in answering any questions you have about alerts.

Questions: Contact Marci Brandenburg, Biosciences Informationist, ( brandenburgm@mail.nih.gov or x5846) for more information about alert services.
