Bladder Cancer was initiated in 2001, and the SPORE in Renal Cancer began in 2003. Bladder cancer is a highly prevalent disease, with an estimated 61,000 new cases and 13,000 deaths in 2006. It is estimated that there will be nearly 39,000 new cases of cancers of kidney and renal pelvis in 2006 and nearly 13,000 deaths. In developing their cancer interventions through molecular-based translational research, the GU SPOREs have established national and international consortia to conduct studies aimed at improving the development and implementation of biomarkers and new therapeutic regimens.
