Animal Diagnostic and Molecular Imaging Isolation Facility (ADMIIF) Use Policy

The in vivo NMR Center MIF provides service to most NIH scientists. Animals from the various institutes congregate in the MIF for imaging studies, and concerns exist that they may become cross-contaminated therein with rodent infectious agents. The CCR Animal Models Initiative Committee (AMI) has secured a designated housing area - CCR ADMIIF, located in 14D 231, to isolate CCR rodents being used in longitudinal imaging studies in the MIF. The use of this holding facility protects central animal facilities from cross contamination. Animals may not return to originating colonies or other animal housing facilities once housed in the ADMIIF, irrespective of health records.

The ADMIIF use policy and practice is subject to periodic review by the AMI committee. Space is limited by quantity, function, and time. Only sufficiently necessary holding space will be assigned, subject to ADMIIF space availability. Use is first come, first served, and on demand; space cannot be reserved/assured ahead of obtaining all study approvals.

To arrange use of the ADMIIF, investigators must provide LASP's Lindsey Briglio, 14D facility manager, brigliol@mail.nih.gov with the following information:

  1. Number of animals and cages needed.
  2. Anticipated length of study.
  3. Transportation needs: Scheduled movements back and forth to MIF; hour/day times approximated as closely as possible (based upon preliminary discussions with MIF personnel). The MIF requires our facility to report health status 48 hours ahead of each readmission to MIF.
  4. Technical services required in the ADMIIF.
  5. Assessment of Hazards for personnel or animals (i.e. radionuclides, etc.).
  6. Have completed ACUC and MIF approval process.

Whenever investigators may be placed upon a wait list for ADMIIF space, current ADMIIF users must adhere to assigned time limits. Significant study changes necessitating routine review by ACUC may not serve to automatically extend holding times. Investigators not using a scheduled imaging time in the MIF should contact Lindsey Briglio at 496-5246, ADMIIF building 14D to allow substitution by another study. The ADMIIF will coordinate with MIF.

Admission to CCR ADMIIF, based upon space needs and utilization requires approval from the LASP facility prior to initiation of an actual MIF-approved imaging study. The animals would be moved into the ADMIIF following the completion of their initial imaging study.

Upon completion of all imaging studies in a given series, investigators
must be responsible for removing animals from the ADMIIF as pathological waste or preserved medical specimens.
