Specialties: high titer viral vectors that allow safe, cell-type specific, constitutive or regulatable transgene expression in the nervous system

Dr. Schubert received his Ph.D. from the Goethe-University in Frankfurt, Germany. He did postdoctoral training with Robert Lazzarini in the Laboratory of Molecular Biology in the NINCDS where he studied the molecular mechanisms of vesicular stomatitis virus transcription and replication. In 1984, Dr. Schubert was appointed head of the Molecular Virology Section of the Laboratory of Genetics within the NINDS. His work focused on targeting HIV infected cells using lentiviral vectors as antivirals. Dr. Schubert took a one-year sabbatical at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, CA, working on the design of viral vectors for the study of the visual system. His principal scientific interest is in developing viral vectors for investigating neurobiological questions and for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.
