Sponsor/Co-Sponsor(s): Division of Special Populations (DSP), NICHD
Location: NIH Main Campus, Bethesda, Maryland
Purpose: To mark the 10 year anniversary of the launch of the health disparities initiative, NICHD DSP hosted its first Health Disparities Seminar Series. Dr. Nancy Adler, professor of medical psychology at the University of California, San Francisco, presented Health Disparities Across the Lifespan: Meanings, Methods and Mechanisms. Dr. Adler’s research focuses on the impact of socioeconomic status (SES) on health and examines how social, psychological, and biological factors associated with SES act together to determine the onset and progression of disease. In keeping with mission of NICHD, this seminar set the stage for open dialogue and discussion about research that addresses disparities in health for all stages of human development, from preconception to adulthood, providing a better understanding of how to address and improve the health of children, adults, families, and communities.
