Current Position:
Program Director, Office of Minority Health Research Coordination
Current Portfolio/Responsibilities:
As Program Director in the Office of Minority Health Research Coordination, she has the primary responsibility for initiating, directing, and coordinating programs aimed at training underrepresented minority scientists in the mission areas of the NIDDK. She oversees the Minority (F31) Predoctoral Fellowship Program and STEP-UP which supports short term summer research training experiences for high school and undergraduate students.
Previous Training and Experience:
Dr. Ferguson received her BS degree from Howard University in 1984 and her MD degree in 1989 from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C. Dr. Ferguson completed residency training in Internal Medicine in 1992, and practiced clinical Internal Medicine for 15 years prior to coming to NIH.
Because of a longstanding love for Public Health and desire to improve the health of the public on a broader scale, she completed studies for the Master of Public Health in 2003 at Emory University, Rollins School of Public Health in Atlanta. Her thesis was “Evaluation of a Diabetes Education Program for the Health Education and P.E. Curriculum of Middle Schools.” She is strongly interested in chronic disease prevention and health promotion in minority populations, particularly Type 2 diabetes prevention in children. As a result, while in graduate school, she created a Diabetes education interactive video game for middle school aged children called “Inter-Galactic Diabetes”.
Committees/ Working Groups:
Dr. Ferguson serves as Chairperson of the NIDDK Minority Affairs Advisory Committee, providing financial support and opportunities for training in Biomedical Research for underrepresented minorities at all career levels throughout the United States. She also serves on the Training Program Directors committee and the Evaluation Working Group.
