Box Types

Federal records centers (FRCs) require that you use specific types of boxes when transferring records to the facility. The following box types are approved for use and can be obtained from the General Services Administration (GSA).

Identify

14 ¾” X 12” X 9 ½”
NSN 8115-00-117-8249
Boxes exceeding these dimensions will not fit on standard FRC shelving.

Special-purpose boxes:

Identify

Half-size box
14 ¾” X 9 ½” X 4 7/8”
NSN 8115-00-117-8338

Identify

Magnetic tape box
14 ¾” X 11 ¾” X 11 ¾”
(lock bottom)
NSN 8115-00-117-8347
This box is intended only for magnetic tape and should not be used for any other purpose.

Identify

X-ray box
18” x 15” x 5 ½”
NSN 8115-00-290-3386

You are responsible for ensuring that each individual accession contains only one type of box. For example, if a group of records needs to be packed in two different box sizes/types, each set of box types will require its own accession number. Contact the Washington National Records Center (WNRC) for assistance in selecting the proper container for any odd-size material.
