Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research

Program Description

The Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research and its sister program, the Summer Research Fellowship Program, offer students the unique opportunity to join one of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases’ (NIAID’s) research laboratories for a minimum of 8 weeks beginning in May through September.

Summer internships are available at NIAID’s Division of Intramural Research (DIR) laboratories in Bethesda or Rockville, Maryland, or at the research facility in Hamilton, Montana, known as the Rocky Mountain Laboratories. The major areas of research focus on immunology, allergy, and infectious diseases. Visit NIAID DIR Laboratories and Other Resources to learn about the specific research under way at NIAID.

As a summer intern, you will

  • Conduct your own small research project or work on part of an ongoing research investigation for a minimum of 8 weeks
  • Develop your technical skills
  • Participate in a NIAID orientation and a seminar series that will introduce you to rapidly progressing research areas.

The program provides

  • Mentorship and learning from NIAID’s full array of researchers—principal investigators, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, medical students—whose experience will guide you through your research experiences
  • Hands-on research experience that relates directly to today’s major health problems
  • The opportunity to work next to nationally and internationally recognized researchers in your chosen field of interest
  • The opportunity to work at a world-renowned state-of-the-art research facility
  • A sense of community with other Summer Internship Program students through a variety of activities, including seminars, brown-bag lunches, and other activities that promote the sharing of personal and professional experiences.
