The average total cost of a competing RPG award increased from $253,913 in FY 1998 to $369,182 (46.6%) in FY 2007. Most of the growth had occurred by FY 2000, when the average increased to $338,024 (an increase of 33.1% since FY 1998).
When the Biomedical Research and Development Price Index (BRDPI) is applied, the growth is more modest. The indexed average cost grew 24.4% from FY 1998 to 2000, and has since fallen. The average constant dollar award in FY 2006 is 10.1% above the FY 1998 amount.
