EXPLORE EMORY

Growing up in an Italian neighborhood in 1940s New Jersey, Candler Professor of Psychology Marshall Duke saw the strength of family all around him. He became part of those extended families and discovered they were not just a source of economic support. They were a compass for the rest of life. That experience shaped his career.

As a researcher convinced of the healing power of family, Duke co-directed the Family Narratives Project, a three-year study revealing that children whose families regularly share meals together have higher self-esteem and more resilience. Read about his work on the Campaign Emory Web site.

Today Dr. Kenneth Brigham serves as director of the Predictive Health Institute, where the focus is on wellness. Thirteen years ago, he was grappling with his own diagnosis of cancer.

Hard Bargain: Life Lessons from Prostate Cancer is the result of a journal that he kept to deal with his illness. "It wasn't until I re-read my journal and had some distance from it, that I felt that it might really help others," Brigham says.
