The following sites have come to our attention through various sources; 
their inclusion in this section does not indicate endorsement by Scientific Library staff

Education

  • American Universities - Provides alphabetically arranged list of addresses of institutional home pages plus links to lists of international and Canadian universities. Useful for addresses of researchers or faculty at institutions providing bachelor or advanced degrees.

  • Chronicle of Higher Education - "Academe Today" offers a current issue of Chronicle in abbreviated version with Job Listings and summaries of the articles in the current weekly issue. (NCIF)

  • College & University Rankings - From University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, links to rankings services along with cautionary notes and a discussion of ongoing controversy over ranking. Links to rankings of graduate programs, business schools, law schools and international rankings.

  • National Institutes of Health (NIH) - Research & Training.

  • RISE (Resources for Involving Scientists in Education - Jointly sponsored by NAS, NAE, and the Institute of Medicine, presents information on roles scientists can play in education.

  • Sense About Science - An independent charitable trust promoting good science and evidence in public debates, using an evidence-based approach to scientific issues. Response is to the misrepresentation of science and scientific evidence on societal issues, from scares about plastic bottles, fluoride and the MMR vaccine to controversies about genetic modification, stem cell research and radiation. Recent and current priorities include MRI, chemicals, detox, peer review and nuclear science. Of Note: section on Peer Review.

Education Sites for Students

  • Classification of Living Things - A tutorial on the principles of taxonomy to guide students in understanding the classifications that reflect evolutionary changes and relationships between organisms.

  • Howard Hughes Medical Institute - Holiday Lectures on Science - Lectures for high school students broadcast live via satellite.

  • Infection Detection Protection - From the American Museum of Natural History, an online magazine designed to make learning about microbes fun. Sections include "Meet the Microbes;" "Bacteria in the Cafeteria," "How Lou Got the Flu," and the "Mixed Up Microbe Mystery," which lets players act as epidemiologists.

  • International Children's Digital Library (ICDL) - Developed by the Internet Archive & the University of Maryland's Human-Computer Interaction Lab, this freely available site aims to provide direct & global access to quality content for children ages 3-13. Available to children worldwide, the ICDL will ultimately consist of over 10,000 children's books drawn from 100 cultures.

  • Mill Hill Essays - Annual essays from Britain's National Institute for Medical Research designed to promote public understanding of science.

  • Science: It's Everywhere - Public outreach initiative from the AAAS designed to help parents and families play a more active role in their children's science education.

  • Try Science - Through interactive experiences with over 400 technology centers worldwide, a gateway for children to science and technology.

  • CareerBuilder- CareerPath.com is a free employment service featuring job listings from major U.S. newspapers including the Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, San Jose Mercury News, and the Washington Post.

  • CareerOneStop - Sponsored by the Department of Labor, tools for job seekers, students, businesses, and career professionals.

  • USA Jobs - Official job site of the U.S. Federal Government.

  • FedWorld - Select Federal Job Announcement icon. This is a database of about 1,500 U.S. Government job announcements updated at 9:30 am EST, Tuesday through Saturday.

  • JobWeb - Home page of the National Association of Colleges and Employers features links to job and career-related sites.

  • Monster - Offers free access to over 55,000 job opportunities world wide in all levels and fields.

  • New York State Dept. of Labor - "Workforce New York". Links to other states job banks.

  • The Scientist Careers - The Scientist Careers is the new life science careers web site from the publishers of The Scientist.

  • Spherion - Committed to recruiting and staffing excellence, Spherion provides integrated solutions to meet the evolving needs and priorities of companies and job candidates.

  • U.S. Department of Labor - Employment and Training Administration - Includes State Job Banks, Federal Government job information, federal pay tables by location, state and local government sites, and private sector job opportunities.

  • University of Maryland Career Center - Searchable by general job listings and resume service, and career center job listings. Includes information on job service guidance. Connects to Biological Research Network.

  • University of Virginia Career Services - An extensive listing of internships searchable via an internship search engine. Provides a list of employers interested in hiring UVA students and alumni.
