Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Graduate Scholarships [nacme.org]

The Minority Ph.D. Program offers eligible doctoral candidates the opportunity to pursue their Ph.D. degrees with financial, mentoring, and guidance support through recognized participating faculty and departments approved by the Sloan Foundation. Must be recommended by faculty advisor who is Sloan Scholar.

The amount of the Scholarship varies and for each group of students working with a particular group of faculty is $30,000 multiplied by the historical retention rate of that group of faculty.

AMBI Scholarship in Science and Medicine [ambiskincare.com] Support African American and Hispanic women in pursuit of careers in science or medicine (at undergraduate and graduate level, including nursing school). African-American or Hispanic women; legal U.S. resident; at least 21 years old; must demonstrate financial need. $10,000 toward tuition in any U.S. accredited science or medicine program One-time; non-renewable March 21, 2008 for paper applications; March 22, 2008 for online applications.
Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) Application Waivers [cic.uiuc.edu] Waivers offered to graduate students at all the Big 10 schools, plus University of Chicago. Bachelor's degree; Apply to Ph.D. program; U.S. Citizen or permanent resident; Minimum GPA 3.0 (4.0 scale); Must intend to pursue academic and/or research career. Cost of graduate application for all member schools. Prior to application deadlines Varies with each school
Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship [nationalacademies.org] To increase the diversity of the nation's college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students. Citizens or nationals of the United States; evidence of superior academic achievement; commitment to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level; enrolled in or planning to enroll in an eligible research-based program leading to a Ph.D. or Sc.D. degree at a U.S. educational institution, and no prior doctoral degree. Cost: $20,000 stipend ($2,000 in lieu of tuition and fees to institution). 3 Years November 15
Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowship [nationalacademies.org] To increase the diversity of the nation's college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students. GEM Fellowships [gemfellowship.org] To increase the number of minority students who pursue doctoral degrees in the natural science disciplines - chemistry, physics, earth sciences, mathematics, biological sciences and computer science. U.S. citizen; no more than 12 months of full-time graduate study; graduate program of study must be one of the following: science, technology, engineering and math. may be used at any participating GEM Member University where the GEM Fellow is admitted. $14,000 stipend in year 1 of the Ph.D. program; GEM Member University support years 2-5; paid summer internship with a GEM Employer Member; waived tuition and fees at a GEM University 1 Year+ November 1
Johns Hopkins University / National Human Genome Research Institute Genetic Counseling Graduate Program Earn master's degree (Sc.M.) or Ph.D. in genetic counseling. Bachelor's degree from accredited U.S. college or university; undergrad courses in biochemistry and genetics; prior counseling experience (paid or unpaid); prior coursework in statistics. Scholarships available from Johns Hopkins University; stipends and financially-based scholarships available from the National Human Genome Research Institute. 2.5 years for Sc.M.
Up to 5 years for Ph.D.

Loan Repayment Program [lrp.nih.gov] To attract health professionals to careers in clinical, pediatric, health disparities, or contraception and infertility research. Doctoral-level degree; government research funding (Federal, state or local) or domestic nonprofit research funding; student loan debt equal to at least 20% of annual salary; U.S. citizenship or permanent residency; Non-Federal government job In exchange for a two or three-year commitment to your research career, NIH will repay up to $35,000 per year of qualified educational debt. In addition, the NIH will make corresponding Federal tax payments for credit to your Internal Revenue Service tax account at the rate of 39 percent of each loan repayment to cover your increased Federal taxes. 2 to 3 years. Opens September and closes December annually.
MARC Predoctoral Fellowships (F31) [nigms.nih.gov] MARC U*STAR Program graduate enrolled in a PhD or combined PhD program in biomedical sciences Awarded to outstanding graduates of the MARC U*STAR Program to help them pursue a graduate degree in the biomedical sciences. $20,772 stipend; tuition and fees; institutional allowance up to $4,200 per year. Up to 5 years. April 5, December 5
MERCK / UNCF Graduate Science Dissertation Fellowship [uncf.org] To increase the number of African Americans in the pipeline of biomedical science education and research. Competitive: expect to award 12 in 2008.

Applicants must be:

  1. African American (Black)
  2. Enrolled full-time in a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral program in the life or physical sciences,
  3. Engaged in and within 1-3 years of completing dissertation research,
  4. A U.S. citizen or permanent resident
Fellowship stipend of $42,000 and departmental award of $10,000 for the fellows research needs. Max of $30,000 stipend allowable in any 12-month period. 12 to 24 months. December
National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) [nsf.gov] Early graduate career support for research-based masters' and doctoral degrees. U.S. citizen; no more than 12 months of full-time graduate study; graduate program of study must be one of the following: science, technology, engineering and math. $40,500 goes to institution to cover GRF stipend and cost of education (fellowship stipend- $30,000) 3 Years Fall of each year.
Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research [grants.nih.gov] To encourage institutions to diversify their student and faculty populations and thus to increase the participation of individuals currently underrepresented in the biomedical, clinical, behavioral and social sciences, including high school students, undergraduate students, post-baccalaureate students, post-master's degree students, graduate students, individuals in postdoctoral training, or faculty members PIs of eligible, active research grants can request a supplement for candidates who will increase diversity on a national or institutional basis - Individuals from racial and ethnic groups that have been shown by NSF to be underrepresented in health-related sciences on a national basis; Individuals with disabilities; Individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds; US citizen or non-citizen national or permanent resident For graduate students - salary support and other necessary expenses, and up to $4,000 per year for supplies and travel. For postdoctoral training: up to $50,000 per year r in salary and fringe benefits, and up to $6,000 per yr for supplies and travel. 2 years or more. Anytime (contact Program Officer)
Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards for Individual Predoctoral Fellowships (F31) to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research [grants.nih.gov] To promote diversity in health-related research for research training leading to the Ph.D. or equivalent research degree, the combined M.D./Ph.D. degree; or another formally combined professional degree and research doctoral degree U.S. citizen or a noncitizen national of the United States or have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence (i.e., possess a currently valid Alien Registration Receipt Card I-551, or other legal verification of such status). Non-citizen nationals are generally persons born in outlying possessions of the United States (i.e., American Samoa and Swains Island); individuals from racial and ethnic groups that have been shown by NSF to be underrepresented in health-related sciences on a national basis; individuals with disabilities; Individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds The NRSA mechanism provides a stipend, tuition and fees, and an institutional allowance. SMART Scholarship Program [asee.org] To recruit and retain civilian scientists and engineers to work in Department of Defense (DoD) agencies and laboratories. Undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students in science or engineering. Full tuition and fees, an annual starting stipend ranging from $22,000 to $39,000, health insurance benefits, paid summer internships, and career opportunities after graduation with the Department of Defense.   December 15
