The Scientific Library and the Conference Center are offering FREE courses videocast live from NIH.

The list below provides links to descriptions and dates for the upcoming classes. Registration may be required. Registration details are included below.

DESCRIPTION: The series consists of 15 lectures by local and outside speakers covering the major areas of genomics. The lectures provide an intensive review of the key areas of ongoing genome research. In this eighth edition of the series, rather than splitting the lectures into "laboratory-based" and "computationally-based" blocks, the lectures have been intermingled by general subject area.

TO REGISTER: Registration is NOT required. Information about CME credits is available on the course website.

TEXTBOOK: A list of supplementary texts (pdf format) is available on the course syllabus (pdf format). All of these titles are available at the NCI-Frederick Scientific Library.

ETHICAL AND REGULATORY ASPECTS OF CLINICAL RESEARCH

You may view the lectures without registering for the course; however, you will not receive credit for attending.

OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE: To learn the codes, declarations, and other documents that govern the ethical conduct of human subject research; review the critical elements of informed consent and their implementation in actual informed consent documents for clinical research; explore controversial issues relating to human subject research, including Phase I research, randomization, children in research, international research, etc; review the purpose if IRBs and provide IRB-like experience in reviewing research protocols; understand the experience of human subjects who have participated in research protocols.

TEXTBOOK: The title of the textbook is The Ethical and Regulatory Aspects of Clinical Research: Readings and Commentaries (JHU Press). You may purchase the book at various bookstores and online resources at a cost of approximately $40. Although this course is free, organizers strongly suggest that each student purchase a copy of the textbook for use during the course. The Scientific Library will have a copy of the textbook available for use within the Library only. It may not be borrowed.

INTRODUCTION TO THE PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF CLINICAL RESEARCH (IPPCR)

No registration is required to view the 2006 sessions.

DESCRIPTION: The Introduction to the Principles and Practice of Clinical Research (IPPCR) course trains researchers in how to design a successful clinical trial by focusing on epidemiologic methods, study design, protocol preparation, patient monitoring, quality assurance and FDA issues. Other areas covered include data management and ethical issues, including protection of human subjects.

TO REGISTER: Complete the printed registration form (Note: To view or print a PDF you need to download free Adobe Reader software) and send it to Marci Brandenburg in the Scientific Library, Building 549 or drop it off at the Scientific Library. ONLY this printed registration form is accepted for this course. Electronic registration is not available for the NCI-Frederick location.

PRINCIPLES OF CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY

DESCRIPTION: The Principles of Clinical Pharmacology course provides an introductory review of pharmacokinetics, drug metabolism and transport, assessment of drug effects, drug therapy in special populations, and contemporary drug development.
