VCDE Workspace Meetings
January 8, 2009 - The VCDE WS received a presentation from the CDE Leadership Group around the submission of a CDE standard proposal from the ICR WS for Organism. The small group that performed the RadLex Vocabulary Review presented its final results for WS vote in the next VCDE teleconference. A final report was given for Silver Level Compatibility Review on the Digital Model Repository (DMR).
December 11, 2008 - The VCDE WS received a presentation on the semantic (VCDE WS) review of the AIM (Annotation and Image Markup) application. The CDE Leadership Group presented the finalization of the UCUM (Unified Codes for Units of Measure) CDE Standards and the final modifications to existing CDE Standards. The Workspace received presentations on new versions of the caB2B application and caDSR version 4.0.0.0.
December 4, 2008 - The VCDE Workspace heard an announcement of the CDE Standard Submission Requirement documentation. The VCDE Workspace heard about the new Life Sciences Domain Analysis Model contract with ScenPro. The VCDE Workspace was briefed on ICR’s Workflow Working Group lessons learned and recommendation document. Finally, Brian Davis gave an update on the VCDE Workspace activities and solicited mentors and reviewers for the new applications.
November 13, 2008 - The VCDE WS reviewed the recent Architecture/VCDE Joint Workspace Face-to-Face Meeting. The WS received a presentation on the Nanoparticle Ontology project (which will serve as the kick off meeting for a vocabulary review). A report was given by the ICR WS Analytical Services Best Practices (ASBP) Working Group on High Throughput (HTP) Data Transfer.
October 16, 2008 - The VCDE WS received a presentation on the RadLex vocabulary to kick-off a VCDE WS Vocabulary Review. A presentation was delivered on enumeration of value domains. The WS received a demonstration of possible future tooling supporting annotation of models in caBIG. The WS discussed modeling 2D arrays and “EPRs” (End Point References).
October 2, 2008 - The VCDE WS received a presentation by Margaret Haber describing some of the interactions that EVS personnel have with other organizations that may be useful knowledge to Mentors from the VCDE WS. An ICR WS Face-to-Face Debrief was given by VCDE WS participants who recently attended the meeting. The VCDE WS heard a proposal for Unified Code for Units of Measure (UCUM) proposed CDE Standard. The WS discussed the SNOMED-CT Vocabulary Review proposal. The WS call closed with a presentation on caBIG® “Enterprise Use Cases”.
September 18, 2008 - The VCDE WS received a kick-off presentation on a recently commenced outside semantic review on the BRIDG model by Cecil Lynch. The WS reviewed the current draft agenda for the upcoming Architecture/VCDE Joint WS Face-to-Face Meeting October 27-29 at Northwestern University. Finally, participants received an update on all the caBIG® projects with mentors and compatibility reviewers, with a call for additional mentors and reviewers.
September 4, 2008 - The VCDE WS received an introduction to the caBIG® Knowledge Centers, including those for Molecular Analysis, CTMS and DSIC. The CDE Leadership Group reported on CDE Standard Modifications. Final recommendations were given for the SNOMED-CT Vocabulary Review.
August 21, 2008 - The VCDE WS saw presentations including an introduction to the caBIG™ Knowledge Centers, including those for Tissue Banks, Vocabulary and caGrid. Interim reports were given for the SNOMED-CT Vocabulary Review and the Silver level compatibility review for Patient Study Calendar.
August 7, 2008 - The VCDE Workspace received a demonstration of the Compatibility Review System (CRS) software beta version 3.0. The Ontology-based Query small group provided a report on its final recommendations and outcomes. The WS call closed with an update on mentor and reviewer assignments to ongoing and upcoming caBIG software Projects and Silver Level Compatibility Reviews
July 24, 2008 - The VCDE WS meeting began with a presentation on the COPPA project as well as how the caDSR is responding to the needs of COPPA. The Workspace saw a presentation about progress on the SNOMED CT Vocabulary Review, as well as, a presentation based on a poster from the caBIG annual meeting on High Impact CDEs. The meeting concluded with information about Silver Level Compatibility Reviews in progress and other projects that have been assigned mentors and others that need mentors.
July 10, 2008 - The VCDE WS heard presentations from posters of the just-concluded caBIG Annual Meeting. In addition, VCDE WS heard a presentation of SNOMED CT, which served as the kick-off meeting for the Vocabulary Review group review of SNOMED CT. Finally, we considered the recommendations from the working group concerning changes to existing CDE standards.

June 12, 2008 - The VCDE WS received an update on the upcoming caBIG Annual Meeting, highlighting VCDE-related information. The Gold Compatibility Review Process Working Group presented an overview of the criteria derived from the caBIG compatibility Guidelines (v3) which will eventually be used in Gold Level compatibility reviews. The VCDE WS considered the recommendations from the small group that evaluated the Bioconductor software application for silver level compatibility.
May 29, 2008 - The VCDE WS continued the presentation/discussion on “High Impact CDEs”. The small working group investigating the impact of “Dynamic Extensions” on caBIG compatibility delivered a follow-up presentation on its draft white paper. The Guides to Mentors discussed associations in UML modeling in caBIG. The small group which reviewed the ChemBank application presented its recommendation to VCDE WS for consideration and vote on Silver level compatibility.
May 15, 2008 - The VCDE WS received a presentation from the Analytical Services Best Practices small group on its Generic Parameter Evaluation. The Terminology Metadata small group presented the final terminology metadata model as completion of the group’s charge. A demonstration of the Dynamic Extensions functionality in caTissue Suite application was given in addition to a report from the small group in the VCDE and Arch WS working through the corresponding caBIG™ compatibility issues that arise. The CDE Leadership Group presented its findings from and future plans for “High-Impact CDE Identification”.
May 1, 2008 - The VCDE WS saw presentations from the Binary Datatypes and the Workflow working groups. The WS received an overview of the caBIG Annual Meeting, to be held June 23-25, in Washington, D.C. The CDE Leadership Group presented a final proposal for CDE Standard Submission Requirements and an update on the CDE Standard Modifications review.
April 17, 2008 - The VCDE WS saw the remaining presentation of the new Semantic Integration Workbench release. The VCDE WS received an update on roles and projects ongoing in VCDE WS.
April 3, 2008 - The VCDE WS considered recommendations from a small working group proposing modifications to caBIG CDE Standards. The WS received an update on the CDEs proposed as standards for “Family Relationship”. The WS also viewed a demonstration of new features in the Semantic Integration Workbench, including functionality around value domains.
March 20, 2008 - The VCDE WS received an update on Enterprise Year 2 (EY2) participation and on current WS projects. The small working group considering a "Common Data Element (CDE) Standard Submission Package" presented their recommendations for vote in the next WS teleconference.
March 6, 2008 - The VCDE WS received Liaison Reports from the ICR, TBPT and Architecture Workspaces and the caGrid team. A white paper regarding cyclical references in models was presented and discussed. Updates were given on Silver level compatibility reviews in process. The Guides to Mentors presented proposed changes to the Compatibility Review Submission Package to better streamline the submission process. The Workspace received an overview of the coming year in the VCDE Workspace. Finally, the CDE Leadership Group presented a CDE Standard Submission Requirements list, which will be formally presented for vote along with the CDE Standard checklist in the next upcoming teleconference.
February 21, 2008 - The VCDE WS received Liaison Reports from the CTMS and TBPT Workspaces and caGrid. The CDE Leadership Group presented updates on CDE Standard Review activities and a detailed report on the work of a CDE Standard Submission Package Requirements Working Group. The VCDE WS received updates on Silver Level Compatibility reviews that are already in process, including Middleware and BioConductor, and an update on projects which are ongoing and upcoming in VCDE WS.
February 7, 2008 - The VCDE WS received Liaison Reports from the ICR, Documentation and Training, and Imaging Workspaces. Participants received a debrief on and provided feedback on action items from the recently concluded Joint Architecture/VCDE Workspace Face-to-Face meeting that took place in Salt Lake City, Utah, January 28-30, 2008. The Guides to Mentors presented a proposed minor change to the Compatibility review criteria checklist. The call ended with updates on Silver Level Reviews currently in process.
January 24, 2008 - The VCDE WS received Workspace Liaison Reports (CTMS, Documentation and Training and Imaging). Final recommendations were presented for the GenePattern Silver Level Review, including background information on an associated issue regarding datatypes that has been considered by the Guides to Mentors Group. A presentation was given on the Healthcare Services Specification Project (HSSP) and CTS2 (Common Terminology Service) in an attempt to connect different external communities with VCDE. Finally, the WS received two pre-presentations from the Guides to Mentors (update to Silver Level Criteria Checklist) and the Terminology Metadata small group work, in anticipation of the upcoming Face-to-Face meeting in Salt Lake City.
January 10, 2008 - The VCDE WS allocated time to Liaison Reports. A presentation was given on the agenda for the upcoming Architecture/VCDE Joint Face-to-Face meeting, Jan 28-30th, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Introductory presentations were given from speakers who will present at the upcoming F2F meeting. Participants received a preview of the CRS (Compatibility Review System) and a presentation on the Semantic MediaWiki. An update on the Silver Level Compatibility review for the National Cancer Imaging Archive (NCIA) project was given.

December 13, 2007 - The VCDE WS allocated time to Liaison Reports (Tissue Banks WS, Arch WS and caGrid Team). John Churin of Tolven concluded his presentation on the Templated RIM effort. A presentation was given by a small group in VCDE WS on the first draft of a metadata model for discovery of Vocabulary Services on caGrid. Presentations were given by the CDE Leadership Group, including an update on the process for identifying “High-Impact CDEs” and announcement of the kick-off of a small working group on modification of CDE Standards. The VCDE WS received updates on Silver Level Compatibility reviews that are in progress and an update from the Guides to Mentors group.
November 29, 2007 - The VCDE WS received a Liaison Report on the recent CTMS Workspace F2F in November 2007. General announcements were given around the Compatibility Guidelines Review Period, registration for the Architecture/VCDE F2F meeting in January 2008, and VCDE Quarterly Report due dates. Presentations from the CDE Leadership Group included an updated Proposal on Modeling Units of Measure, High-Impact CDEs, and a recommendation from the small group reviewing the proposed CDE standard for Family Relationships. Frank Hartel described the Terminology Open Portal (TOP) project and opportunities for VCDE WS participant involvement, and George Komatsoulis described some of the issues that the VCDE WS should consider around Value Sets. Finally, John Churin described TRIMS, an HL7 RIM-based XML representation of vocabularies and metadata.
November 15, 2007 - The VCDE WS received Liaison Reports from the Documentation & Training, and Imaging Workspaces. The Guide to Mentors group gave a presentation on version control of documentation, and the CDE leadership group provided a recommendation on an Education Levels CDE Standard. A kick-off was held for geWorkbench silver level compatibility review, and a report was given on the caTissue Core v1.2 silver level review. Lastly, a presentation on the NCIA project was given that demonstrated the project’s history in re-using CDEs in a software development environment.
November 1, 2007 - The VCDE WS received Liaison Reports (ICR, TBPT, Arch/caGrid). A presentation was given on the software application caBench to Bedside (caB2B). The CDE Leadership Group presented an update on CDE Standards (Person Training and Education Suffix), a summary of the process of high-impact CDE mining and identification, and a revisiting of the modeling proposal for units of measure. VCDE WS received an update on the External Compatibility documentation and a report on the compatibility review of caTissue Core version 1.2.
October 18, 2007 - The VCDE WS allocated time to Liaison Reports from CTMS, Documentation & Training, and Imaging Workspaces. The CDE Leadership Group reviewed the final Name Prefix CDE standard recommendations and its Units of measure Modeling proposal. The small group working on Vocabulary reviews reported back to VCDE on suggested terminologies for VCDE WS/caBIG to consider as standards. The Silver Level Compatibility review for Bioconductor was kicked off and the WS discussed the draft caBIG Compatibility Guidelines version 3.0.
October 4, 2007 - The VCDE WS received Liaison Reports from the ICR, Tissue Banks and Architecture Workspaces and from caGrid. Discussion was held on scaling compatibility reviews for a Silver Level Certification Program. The Guides to Mentors provided an update on current activities. Two Silver Level Compatibility Review Kickoffs were announced, specifically NCIA (National Cancer Imaging Archive) and GenePattern. An update and possible solutions for handling Generic Parameters were presented by the ICR Analytical Services Best Practices group. The CDE Leadership Group announced the kickoff of a small group to review caBIG™ Data Standard Review Criteria and presented a proposal on Modeling caBIG Units of Measure.
September 20, 2007 - The VCDE WS allocated time to Liaison Reports (ICR WS, CTMS, Documentation and Training WS, Imaging WS). Frank Hartel described User Acceptance Testing of the new terminology browser in NCI BioPortal. The Small Group developing a Unified Vocabulary Review Process for VCDE/caBIG led a discussion on the next appropriate Terminologies to review. The VCDE WS received a recommendation from the review team and vote on the silver level review of caXchange. The Silver Level Compatibility Review of the Imaging WS Project “Middleware” was kicked off. Finally, an update was given from the CDE Leadership Group, followed by a vote on the Person Suffix Code CDE standard proposal and an update on the Person Name Prefix candidate CDE standard currently under caBIG™ review.
September 6, 2006 - The VCDE WS received Liaison Reports from the TBPT WS, Architecture WS and caGrid Team. The WS received an update regarding the upcoming release of Vocabulary Services in caCORE 4.0. An update from the “Guides to Mentors” group was given, including final discussions regarding silver level compatibility criteria checklists and processes. Two CDE standard review updates were given, with a WS vote to pass the Name Prefix CDE package on to caBIG™ review and a review of the Suffix Code CDE review issues. Finally, the WS received a demonstration of GForge, the NCICB Open Source Project Site.
August 23, 2007 - The VCDE WS received Liaison Reports from the CTMS, Documentation & Training, and Imaging Workspaces. The WS reviewed action items from the Joint Architecture/VCDE WS F2F meeting (Aug 6-8) and reviewed a revised proposal from the Concept Identifier group. Finally, a CDE Leadership Group update was given and an introduction to the next two upcoming proposed CDE standards for review.

July 26, 2007 - This VCDE WS teleconference focused on the upcoming F2F meeting August 6-8, 2007. We briefly reviewed the draft agenda, and then heard short presentations that introduced topics for the F2F meeting. These included: Concept ID on the Grid, Vocabulary Services, Compatibility Review System software, Silver Level Compatibility Reviews, and UML Guidance for CDE Standards. The VCDE WS heard presentations from the group which reviewed caMOD for silver level compatibility and we heard a presentation on BRIDG.
July 12, 2007 - The VCDE WS allocated time to Liaison Reports (ICR, TBPT, Arch and caGrid). The VCDE WS voted on the proposal to make CTCAE a caBIG vocabulary standard (NOT PASSED). We heard final recommendations and voted upon the proposed BSA CDE standards. We heard final recommendations on the C3PR and caTRIP applications that have undergone silver level review. We heard an update from the Guides to Mentors group (on mentoring and compatibility reviews) and the CDE Leadership group (on UML model guidance with CDE standards).
June 28, 2007 - The VCDE WS allocated time to Liaison Reports (CTMS, D&T, Imaging). We saw a draft agenda of the VCDE Arch WS Face to face meeting for Aug 6-8. The VCDE WS heard a kick off presentation for caTISSUE Core 1.2 Silver level compatibility review and heard reports from the silver level reviews of caTRIP and C3PR. We heard a presentation on caCORE incremental releases by Denise Warzel. We will hear the final disposition of proposed Body Mass Index CDE Standards and hear the recommendations of the small group for Body Surface Area CDE Standards.
June 14, 2007 - The VCDE WS received Liaison Reports from the Architecture, ICR, and TBPT Workspaces. Updates were given on the status of the proposed BMI and BSA CDE Standards. The CDE Leadership team reported on updates to work on CDE standards and UML Guidance. Denise Warzel presented an update on the caCORE 4.0 release and Leslie Derr led a presentation and discussion on the Enterprise Adoption Program.
May 31, 2007 - The VCDE WS continued discussion and decided upon recommendations from the small group “ConceptIDs on caGrid” regarding vocabulary services on the caGrid. VCDE WS heard updates from the “Guides to Mentors” group and the “CDE Leadership Group”. There was also a final report out on the caIntegrator Compatibility review.
May 17, 2007 - The VCDE WS received Liaison Reports from the CTMS, Documentation & Training, and Imaging Workspaces. The small working group for “Concept Identification on caGrid” presented their recommendations which will be considered in a formal WS vote on the following call. The remainder of the call focused on current CDE standard updates and metadata reusability. Specifically, the proposed CDE standard for Body Surface Area (BSA) was announced as submitted by the NCI Context Administrators and will begin small group review following the call. A new VCDE small group called “CDE Review Leadership” presented their goals and priorities and their proposed tasks. The small group considering “Metadata Reuse” presented their recommendations and prioritization. These recommendations will be presented in further detail in subsequent calls with votes on how to proceed in potentially implementing them.
May 3, 2007 - The VCDE WS received Liaison Reports from the ICR, TBPT and Architecture Workspaces and caGrid. The WS received an update on the caGrid development schedule and reviewed scope documents for caGrid. The WS continued its review of the SOP for Leading a Silver Level Compatibility Review from the “Guides to Mentors” group. Finally, the WS received updates from Silver Level Compatibility Reviews teams which are presently reviewing four software development projects: caMOD, caIntegrator, caTRIP, and C3PR (Release 1).
April 19, 2007 - The VCDE WS received a presentation from Olivier Bodenreider on the vocabulary review of NCI Thesaurus, and the WS voted to pass the recommendation to nominate NCI Thesaurus as a caBIG™ standard vocabulary. The VCDE WS received Liaison Reports from Architecture, CTMS, D&T, Imaging, and caGrid). The Body Mass Index (BMI) CDE Standard Review group presented proposed guidance for UML modeling of the standard CDEs for Body Mass Index (BMI), and the WS voted and passed the package to go on to 30-day caBIG™ community review with a rescinded information source CDE from the original CDE package. The VCDE WS received an update from the Guides to Mentors group and various updated on Silver Level Reviews in process (caTRIP, caMOD, C3PRv1, and caIntegrator).
March 22, 2007 - The VCDE WS allocated time to Liaison Reports (Arch, CTMS, Training and Documentation, Imaging, caGrid). There were 2 presentations for Kick-off of Silver Level Reviews: caIntegrator/Rembrandt and caXchange as well as a report on the Silver Level Compatibility Review for CAE. The VCDE WS heard from the Guide to Mentors group on Standard Operating Procedures for “how to be a mentor” and “How to conduct a silver level review”. We heard from the small group considering “Metadata Re-use” and saw how some of their recommendations have arisen from the proposed BMI (Body Mass Index) CDE standards, which will be considered for a vote.
March 8, 2007 - The VCDE WS allocated time to Liaison Reports. The VCDE WS heard from the Guide to Mentors group on issues and answers in mentoring and silver level reviews. Jim Cimino from Columbia University presented on his research regarding Vocabulary Evaluation with the CTCAE. There was a presentation on the updates to the Semantic Annotation Workbench (SIW 3.2) by Jenny Brush. We heard updates on the proposed BMI (Body Mass Index) CDE standards, and kicked off a silver level review for the C3PR (Cancer Central Clinical Patient Registry) version 1.
February 22, 2007 - The VCDE WS allocated time to Liaison Reports. We discussed the outcomes from the caBIG Annual Meeting. VCDE WS heard updates on proposed CDE standards, and updates on Silver level reviews. The VCDE WS heard from the Guide to Mentors group on issues and answers in mentoring and silver level reviews.

January 25, 2007 - The VCDE Workspace received Liaison reports from the Architecture, CTMS, and Imaging Workspaces. An Annual Meeting Overview was presented, including agenda and registration information. Two CDE standards presentations were given: an update on the BMI proposed standard and a proposal for changes to CDE standards. The VCDE WS heard from the Guide to Mentors group on issues/answers in mentoring and silver level reviews. A report out was given on the CAE silver level compatibility review and a presentation was given to kick off the silver level compatibility review for NCIA.
January 11, 2007 - The VCDE WS allocatde time to Liaison Reports (ICR, TBPT, Strategic Planning, and DSIC). We heard a presentation from Daniel Rubin on the CBIO Portal project for ontologies. We heard from Jim Cimino on his evaluation of the CTCAE (common terminology criteria for adverse events) vocabulary. There was a presentation from The Cancer Genome Atlas-Biospecimen Core Resource (TCGA-BCR) team, designed to elicit feedback from the VCDE WS participants. We heard a brief update on CDE standards and the introduction of a new proposed CDE standard for Body Mass Index (BMI). And finally we heard a final Silver Level Review report for the GeneConnect application and an interim report for CAE application.
