About ACS Journals & Usage-Based Pricing - Effective in 2008, the American Chemical Society (ACS) announced the implementation of a new pricing model for web subscriptions. Pricing plans were established for four library types: domestic academic, international academic, corporate, and government. Each plan assigns customers to specific tiers using criteria to ensure that like customers pay like amounts for their subscriptions. The model utilizes value-based metrics such as number of articles published, ISI impact factor, and total downloads (combined HTML and PDF) to establish prices for the online versions of each ACS journal. The usage for 2008 pricing is based on 2006 usage of all ACS journals at a particular site. One positive feature of this model is that while the more heavily used titles are priced higher, less heavily used titles go down in price. For NCI-Frederick, the five highest priced titles are: Journal of the ACS; Biochemistry and Journal of Medicinal Chemistry (tie); Journal of Organic Chemistry and Organic Letters (tie). While not an unreasonable method for calculating subscription costs, this model does present a challenge for future budgeting. We are most concerned about the lack of transparency of pricing information for the new model on the ACS website. In particular, the Tiers for usage ranges and pricing differences among the four library types are not apparent. Although ACS is among the first publishers to implement usage-based pricing for their web subscriptions, we do not expect they will be the last. For details about ACS usage-based pricing, visit the ACS website at http://pubs.acs.org/valuebasedpricing/index.html#

Librarians Protest Science's Departure From JSTOR, Fearing a Trend

  • See the article from The Chronicle of Higher Education, October 11, 2007, regarding recent news about the journal Science moving it's digital archive to the AAAS online platform. An excerpt about JSTOR - "Since its inception a decade ago as a project of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, JSTOR has attracted more than 450 publishers and 900 academic journals to its digital archive. More than 3,600 institutions subscribe to the archive's 14 multidisciplinary and discipline-specific collections." This includes NIH.

To read this and other articles from The Chronicle, access to The Chronicle of Higher Education (1995 - ) is licensed by the Scientific Library site-wide for the NCI-Frederick research community and is available from the Library's Online Journals list.

New Electronic Resources & Files Added -

  • Web of Science now includes all records for Science Citation Index Expanded back to 1900!
  • The MDL DiscoveryGate platform is now available on the Library's Beilstein seat. DiscoveryGate provides user-friendly access to chemical, pharmacological and biological information with structure-based compound and reaction searching of the CrossFire Beilstein Commander, and other synthetic methodology databases. Please note that this product was licensed by the Scientific Library solely for access from the Library's Beilstein seat. Learn more about databases available via DiscoveryGate from the provider's website at the URL https://www.discoverygate.com/iss/shell/services/outersite/outercontent.jsp?pageref=about.
