| Tethered Applications/Grants | When applications are submitted for multiple PI's from multiple organizations, the application from the partnering Institutions are associated and reviewed as a single project. If an award is made, each of the involved institutions will receive a separate grant to fund the collaborative project. All applications are linked by a common project title and by cross-references within each application.

| Total Project Costs | The total allowable costs (both direct costs and facilities and administrative costs) incurred by the grantee to carry out a grant-supported project or activity. Total project costs include costs charged to the NIH grant and costs borne by the grantee to satisfy a matching or cost-sharing requirement.

| Translational Research
| Translational research includes two areas of translation. One is the process of applying discoveries generated during research in the laboratory, and in preclinical studies, to the development of trials and studies in humans. The second area of translation concerns research aimed at enhancing the adoption of best practices in the community. Cost-effectiveness of prevention and treatment strategies is also an important part of translational science.

| Type 1 Diabetes Initiative | Funding provided by the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 for research on the prevention and cure of type 1 diabetes. These funds are administered by the NIDDK through the authority provided to it by the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.
