Introduction
Welcome to a video course based on Helping Patients Who Drink Too Much: A Clinician’s Guide, produced by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), a component of the National Institutes of Health, with guidance from physicians, nurses, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, and clinical researchers.
The NIAAA conducts and funds most U.S. research on diagnosing, treating, and preventing alcohol use disorders. In recent years, there have been many exciting research findings directly relevant to clinical practice, and the NIAAA has pulled together an evidence-based Clinician’s Guide with a 4-step approach to helping patients who drink too much.
In the program you will be viewing, the Guide is brought to life through four short and engaging video case scenarios. You’ll see clinicians in different settings screen patients for heavy drinking, and then assess them for alcohol use disorders. Based on how the patients respond, you’ll see how doctors use different strategies for treatment and follow up.
Throughout the program, experts will offer insights and ask you what *you* would do in that situation. The Guide will be your guide.
