Census Bureau Office in Tulsa Hiring 1,000

Census Bureau Hiring 5,000-6,000 Temporary Employees to Work Statewide

January 12, 2009 -- The U.S. Census Bureau office in Tulsa will begin hiring about 1,000 people in the coming weeks to work temporary jobs. Apply today!

The temporary workers are hired by the Census Bureau every 10 years to help update address lists and conduct interviews with community residents.

Dec. 9, 2008 - New data from the 2005-2007 American Community Survey is now available for download.

  • This data release covers all areas with a population of 20,000 or more;
  • This is the first release of data for communities with populations of 20,000 to 64,999;
  • This is three year, multi-year data, not an averaging or restatement of single year data;

New Employment Briefing Finds Oklahoma's Economy Continues to Add Jobs

October 22, 2008 - A new employment briefing by the Oklahoma Department of Commerce finds Oklahoma's economy continues to add jobs despite the national economy losing jobs.

Highlights include:

  • Oklahoma's economy added 12,100 jobs over the previous year at a time when the national economy lost 591,000 jobs;
  • Oklahoma's seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate fell from 4% in August to 3.8% in September; 
  • Oklahoma's unemployment rate is the sixth-lowest in the nation.

Commerce Releases Brief on Wind-Component Manufacturing in Oklahoma

October 3, 2008 -- The Oklahoma Department of Commerce recently released a two-page briefing that shows Oklahoma's employment in potential wind-component manufacturing industries is on the rise. And annual wages equal $40,709, which is almost 15% higher than the average wage in the state as a whole.

New Labor Briefing Details Claremore Area Workforce

September 3, 2008 - A new labor briefing by the Oklahoma Department of Commerce analyzes the labor force in the Claremore area.

Highlights include:

  • Survey is based on a study of the population within a 25 mile radius of the Claremore area;
  • 54,036 workers are available for work;
  • 43.8% of the current workforce in the Claremore area is estimated to have at least a Bachelor's degree;
  • 65.3% of so-called Job Keepers would be willing to change positions, especially if they could receive more than $20 per hour.

2006 Oklahoma Employer Workforce Survey Results

The Oklahoma Department of Commerce has recently released a report and detailed tables from the Oklahoma Workforce Employer Survey.

The survey was conducted in the summer and fall of 2006 of all employers in the state with over 10 employees, with the exception of food and retail establishments. Over 2,800 surveys were returned and analyzed with assistance from the Oklahoma State Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission, and the Governor's Council for Workforce and Economic Development.

New Internet Portal Is a Growing Network for Experts & Sharing Research

A group of scientists, academics and nonprofit groups are creating a new Internet directory to provide information vetted by experts on all major topics of human knowledge.  Released recently in a pilot, Digital Universe aims to collect the best of the Web in one spot. It differs from other search engines and directories in two key ways:  by rejecting advertising and by putting its content under the editorial control of a self-organizing network of experts.  See the article in the Washington Post (requires registration).
