Detailed Forecast Discussion
FORECAST SUMMARY: Monday, January 12th, 2009 through Tuesday, January 20th, 2009 PM-2.5: 24-hour Fine Particulate concentrations are expected to be mostly Good through the forecast period. FORECAST DISCUSSION: Quite weather conditions are expected Monday before the start of an active weather pattern for the rest of the week. Winds Monday are light and scattered hourly fine particulate readings in the Moderate range are being seen across the state. The southeastern portion of the state has the best chance at seeing the daily 24-hr fine particulate level reach the Moderate range Monday; the rest of the state will be in the Good range. The active weather pattern will begin late Monday/early Tuesday as low pressure tracks along the Michigan, Indiana and Ohio borders. This storm system will bring snow showers beginning late Monday and wind speeds will begin increasing early Tuesday. This combination of snow and wind will cause considerable blowing and drifting snow and on-and-off blizzard like conditions are possible. To top it all off, the stronger northwest winds will bring COLD air into the state. Wind chill readings well below zero can be expected Tuesday afternoon. Winds will begin subsiding later Tuesday as will the snow showers. A short break in the weather can be expected early Wednesday; however, another storm system is forecasted to basically take the same track along the Michigan, Indiana and Ohio borders Wednesday into Thursday. Increased winds Wednesday will again make blowing snow an issue. Cold conditions will linger as surface and upper level winds remain from the northwest through the rest of the work week. The second storm system should pull east of the region later Thursday with only lake effect snows in its wake. With this active weather pattern expect Good fine particulate levels through Friday. EXTENDED FORECAST: High pressure will slide south of the region Friday into Saturday allowing lake effect snows to taper off. Extended forecast models are showing a storm system moving through the state Sunday into Monday and another system late Tuesday. If this extended forecast pans out I do not expect any significant fine particulate build up through midweek next week. Fine particulate levels may get into the low Moderate range Saturday when the state is between weather systems; otherwise, levels are expected to be in the Good range. I will keep an eye on the air quality conditions and will update this forecast Friday if the extended forecast changes. Forecast updated by Stephanie Hengesbach: Monday, January 12th, 2009 Next forecast update: Tuesday, January 20th, 2009
