The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), National Institutes of Health, will participate in a press conference on Thursday, March 14, at 9:30 a.m. to kick-off the 10th Annual National Inhalants and Poisons Awareness Week (NIPAW), March 17 - 23, 2002. To coincide with the 2002 NIPAW, NIDA has produced two informational post cards featuring graphics from the National Inhalant Prevention Coalition website, courtesy of GSD&M, and is distributing 12,500 copies of these free in surf, ski, and skate shops nationwide. These shops reach younger teen audiences.
NIDA also has recently launched a new inhalants research initiative, Inhalant Abuse: Supporting Broad-Based Research Approaches, to intensify its research efforts on the epidemiology, social, behavioral, cognitive, and neurobiological consequences of inhalant abuse, as well as treatment and prevention. Findings from this research initiative will enhance NIDA's understanding of inhalant abuse and shape the Institute's public information efforts in this area.
NIDA now reaches middle schoolers with Mind Over Matter, a 7-part series including a segment on inhalants that encourages young people to learn about the neurobiological effects of drugs; and reaches older English and Spanish audiences with the Research Report series and the NIDA Infofax on Inhalants. All of these materials can be downloaded from NIDA's website, www.drugabuse.gov.
