South Wylbur Is Available from TitanMilten/Wylbur Hostname to Change in September
Wylbur has lived on NIH computers since its creation almost 35 years ago for the mainframe system that evolved into what we now refer to as the South system. Despite updates over the years, the South system is showing its age and will retire from service January 12, 2004. Wylbur's new home is Titan.
The traditional methods of accessing Wylbur on the South systemMilten (Wylbur's own terminal communications program) or TSO/TCAM (line-by-line TSO)are not available on Titan because of vendor support issues. Instead, the access method on Titan is Wylbur under TSO/VTAM (full-screen/tn3270). Some featuressuch as scrolling backare not available in full-screen mode. But for the most part, what you do now in Wylbur you will continue to be able to do using TSO/VTAM. For a detailed list of changes, go to the Titan Transition Access NIH Wylbur Web page.
To make it easier for South system Wylbur users to move to Titan, CIT has made the South Wylbur available from the same logon panel (IP address) used to get to Titan. If you use this new method to access Wylbur on the South system now, your transition from South Wylbur to Titan Wylbur will be much simpler. Moreover, you will become accustomed to using Wylbur in its full-screen mode.
What Should You Do Before September 8?
On September 8, 2003, the IP hostname wylbur.cu.nih.govused to access Wylbur on the South via Miltenwill no longer work. If you use Wylbur via Milten, you should act now to avoid any disruption when this happens.
You have the following choices:
|
|
To Use Wylbur from TitanRecommended
When you connect to this IP address you will go to an Application menu. From this menu you can select the South system (TSOSOUTH) to access Wylbur on the South system or Titan (NIHTSO) to access Wylbur on Titan. When the South system shuts down in January, 2004, TSOSOUTH will disappear from the menu, and only Titan Wylbur (from NIHTSO) will be available. If you do not have the QWS3270 software installed on your computer, you can download it by going to Silk Web on Titan and selecting "NIH TCP Tools." To add a session for Titan and for instructions on accessing Wylbur from Titan (NetView Access), go to the Titan Transition South Logon Web page. |

To Continue Using Wylbur via Milten on the South System Remember, this will not work after the South system is removed in January!
|
Both of these changes can be made now. Either method will allow you to continue to access the South system Wylbur until January, 2004. If you take the plunge and define a session in QWS3270, you will then be able to choose between South Wylbur or Titan Wylbur each time you log onsimply by selecting either TSOSOUTH or NIHTSO (the Titan TSO).
Why Are We Making This Change Now?
We want to be certain that all Wylbur/Milten users have time to learn to use Wylbur from Titan while there is still the opportunity to fall back on Wylbur under Milten. Because of extensive use of scripting for Kermit, the IP hostname for TSO/TCAM will not change at this time.
If you need assistance with any of these changes, please contact TASC at (301) 594-6248.
