Wylbur RETRIEVE Command to Be Replaced July 13
Users of the MVS South system's hierarchical storage management (HSM) systemin use since the early 1990smay not know that disk data is gradually moved to secondary levels of storage, depending on how often the data set is used. Data sets that are unused for extended periods of time are compressed to use less space on the disk volumes and then later moved to tape storage if the data remains unused. When a batch job accesses any data set in these secondary levels, the data set is restored automatically to primary storageall data sets, that is, except those migrated under the storage system used prior to HSM in 1994. In fact, the old migration system still is home to about 500,000 data sets.
RETRIEVE Migrated Data Sets on the Web
Data sets saved in the old migration system have been accessible only from Wylbur. Wylbur has a RETRIEVE command to bring a data set from the old system into the newer HSM system. Wylbur also has options on some commands (e.g., SHOW) to display old migrated data setsSHOW DSNAMES PAST and SHOW DSNAMES BOTH will display old data sets.
A Web interface has been developed to allow users to display, retrieve, rename, or delete data sets in the old migration system. This new Web interfacehttp://silk.nih.gov/oldmigrwill be available beginning July 13, 2003.
Please NoteSince the Web interface and Wylbur use different, and incompatible, methods to process old migrated data sets, the Wylbur RETRIEVE command and the PAST and BOTH options of the Wylbur SHOW DSNAMES, SCRATCH, and RENAME commands will no longer be available as of July 13, 2003.
The new Web interface will allow users to retrieve old data sets after the South system has migrated to Titan.
If you have any questions about this new Web facility, please call TASC at (301) 594-6248.
