Titan UsersA New Option for Managing Tapes Is Available
On January 8, 2003, a new interface to the Titan tape inventory system became available. This facility is accessed from Option L.5 of ISPF on Titan, and will replace the old Option L.4 tape inventory interface. The new L.5 facility provides immediate feed back about the status of tapes, unlike L.4 that does not reflect changes made until the following day.
The old tape inventory panels will be maintained in parallel with the new panels until March 1, 2003, after which the old tape inventory panels will be decommissioned.
If you select option L.5, the following menu will appear:

Menu item 1 allows you to review tape inventory information either by volume serial number or by data set name. Providing a specific volser or range of volsers will give you all information about that tape or tapes. Data set name inquiries can be for a fully-qualified name (one particular data set) or all tape data sets that follow a specific naming convention.
Inquiries based on dsnames use the hyphen (-) as a prefix delimiter. That is, everything before the hyphen is considered a prefix and must match, and anything after the hyphen may be different. For example, to see all data sets that begin with ABC, specify ABC- in the Data Set Name field. To find tape data that follows the old North tape naming convention of account.userid, you could look for tape data sets beginning with account AAA and userid BBB by specifying "AAA.BBB-" in the Data Set Name field.
The following example shows information returned from a request to view a specific volume:

Once the information is displayed, you may update the expiration date by typing "U" in the Command field. The Expiration Date (EXPDT) is the only field that is available for users to update.
Much of the information provided is useful only to the CIT tape librarian, however there are several fields of interest to customers:
VOLSERthe volume serial number that the data set resides on
DSNthe entire data set name
DSN17the last 17 characters of the data set name (what is electronically recorded in the tape data set label)
EXPDTthe expiration date of the data setwhen the data set will be deleted. Possible values for this field include:
YYYY/JDDdata set will expire on a specific date (where YYYY is the year, followed by the date JDD in Julian date formatthe number of days from January 1). For example, 2004/001 is January 1, 2004; the expiration date 2003/365 is December 31, 2003.
CATALOGdataset will expire when it is uncataloged
PERMANENTdata set will be kept indefinitelyuntil the EXPDT field is changed to another value
STAT/01this designation may show up if you try to set an expiration date that has already passed. Rather than immediately deleting the data set, the system assumes you may have made a mistake and gives you the opportunity to change the date to a valid value. If no change is made to this value, the tape data set will be deleted by the system during regular cleanup maintenance.
CDATE, CTIME, CJOB, CPGM, CDDNAMEthe date, time, JOBname, program name and ddname for the tape data set creation
LDATEdate the data set was last used (written to or read from)
RECFM, LRECL BLKSIZE, BLKCNTthe record format, record length, blocksize and blockcount of the data set
Tapes that are part of a multivolume data set have values in the following fields-otherwise these fields are blank.
VOLSEQthe sequence of this tape in the multivolume set
1STVOL-the first volume in the set
NEXTVOL-the volume that follows this tape in the set
PREVVOLthe volume that came before this tape in the set
New feature for Cataloged Tape Data sets
Information on cataloged tape data sets can also be accessed in ISPF option 3.4. When viewing a data set list, if you type Ti next to the dataset name-the volume serial number, the size and format of the data set, plus the creation and last used information is available. This data is only viewable-updates can only be done from the tape inventory panels.
For questions on the new ISPF option L.5 tape inventory panel or viewing tape information from option 3.4, contact TASC at (301) 594-6248.
