Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research

Application Process

How should I apply?

  • You must submit an electronic Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research application available at the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH’s) Office of Intramural Training and Education Web site: Apply online at www.training.nih.gov.

Please note: Returning students with prior National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) or NIH experience must reapply.

  • To apply specifically to NIAID, select one of the following from the drop-down list on the application:
    • “National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Bethesda, MD” (This selection includes laboratories in Rockville.)
    • “National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Hamilton, MT”
    • “National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Vaccine Research Center (NIAID/VRC) Bethesda, MD” (Please contact the VRC Summer Internship Program Coordinator for information about their specific program.)

Please note: Applicants who indicate a preference to work in a particular Institute or Center may still be considered for positions in other Institutes.

Are there any hints for applying?

Write a cover letter describing your research interests and career goals. Be sure to include information about past research experiences.

  • Proofread your application and cover letter.
  • When choosing references, select two people who have direct knowledge of your scientific interest and abilities.
  • Apply early. Your application will be viewable by researchers from the time that you submit it.

I have submitted my application, what else should I do?

Make sure that your references have posted their letters of recommendation.

  • Review the list of NIAID Division of Intramural Research laboratory descriptions to determine which laboratories are of interest. You also can access research abstracts by going to NIH Annual Reports.
  • Once you have selected the laboratory(s) for which you would like to intern, send an e-mail to the NIAID Training Coordinator listing the laboratories that most interest you. The Training Coordinator will contact the laboratories you listed and alert them of your interest.
  • If there is a particular NIAID researcher with whom you wish to work, you may contact that person directly to let him/her know of your interest and that you have an application online, waiting to be reviewed. Contact information for all researchers is available at the NIH Directory.

  • If you applied before receiving your fall grades, update your application to include those grades.
