Governor Haley Barbour announced today Toyota will honor financial commitments made to the state and local entities even though the company has delayed start of production at its Prius plant, which is under construction in Blue Springs.

“We in Mississippi are deeply disappointed about the decision; however, Toyota emphasized the Prius plant in Blue Springs will go forward, that this is simply a delay. Toyota recognizes this delay creates extra costs for the state and local governments, and has told us they will work with us to mitigate these extra costs."

GOVERNOR BARBOUR SETS SPECIAL ELECTION FOR COAHOMA COUNTY SHERIFF ON JANUARY 27
Governor Haley Barbour has called a special election for January 27, 2009, to select the Coahoma County Sheriff. If a run-off election should be required, it will be held on February 17, 2009. The Governor set the date after the Mississippi Supreme Court ruled that a single special election must be held.

The event comes as Governor Barbour is on an economic development mission that also will take him to Germany and Spain, where he will meet with representatives of companies interested in learning more about doing business in Mississippi.

Governor Haley Barbour today detailed a conservative, prudent, realistic Executive Budget Recommendation for Fiscal Year 2010 that fully funds the Mississippi Adequate Education Program, protects Medicaid, reduces some spending, and raises new revenues through higher taxes on tobacco products.
