Gastrointestinal (GI) SPOREs

SPOREs in GI cancers focus on translational research in gastrointestinal system, including cancers of the colon, rectum, stomach, esophagus, small intestine, liver, gallbladder and other digestive organs. Over 253,500 newly diagnosed cases of cancer in the digestive system, and 136,060 deaths, will be expected in the United States in the year 2005, as American Cancer Society estimates. Cancers of the colon, rectum, and pancreas account for the majority of new diagnoses. The GI SPORE program was expanded in the year 2002 from two to four funded SPOREs. Currently, two GI SPOREs focus on colorectal cancers, and other two work on the cancers of colon, rectal, esophageal, and pancreas.
