PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

POLICY

National Cancer Institute at Frederick (NCI-F) employees potentially exposed to hazards in the workplace shall be furnished, by the employer, with personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriate to the task (e.g., eye and face protection such as non-prescription glasses, goggles, or face shields and/or prescription safety eyeglasses; respirators; safety shoes; hard hats; gloves; laboratory coats). Visitors to NCI-F will be supplied with PPE necessary to provide protection from potential hazards to which they may be exposed.

 

PROCEDURE

Detailed procedures are stipulated in various sections of the NCI-F Environment, Health, and Safety Program (EHS) Operations and Compliance Manual located at http://home.ncifcrf.gov/ehs/ehs.asp?id=51 . These include Hearing Conservation, Respirator Program, Personal Protective Equipment, Chemical Hygiene Plan, Radiation Protection, Pathogen Program, Chemical Exposure, Ergonomic Program, and Employee Right to Know. RESPONSIBILITIES

Occupational Health Services (OHS) and Environment, Health, and Safety Program (EHS)

  • Assist supervisors and employees in complying with this Policy and Procedure.
  • Assist supervisors in evaluating work areas to determine if hazards which necessitate the use of PPE are present.
  • Ensure that PPE issued to employees provides appropriate protection and conforms to appropriate standards.
  • Coordinate the provision of training to each individual required to use PPE as described in the EHS Operations and Compliance Manual.

NCI-F supervisors

  • With assistance from EHS as needed, evaluate work areas to determine if hazards which necessitate the use of PPE are present.
  • Ensure that PPE is readily available to employees and visitors potentially exposed to hazards.
  • Enforce mandatory use of PPE when it is required to protect visitor and employee health and safety.
  • Ensure that PPE is properly stored and maintained and that employees are trained in the proper use of relevant PPE.
  • Complete the NCI-Frederick New Employee Safety Checklist, Which reviews PPE requirements, with all new employees, and return checklist to EHS.

NCI-F employees

  • Employees requiring PPE are responsible for completing the appropriate request form(s) and/or documentation.   • Employees are required to receive documented training on the proper use of this safety equipment prior to its use. EHS/OHS provide training in respiratory protection and hearing conservation. Training on steel-toed shoes, gloves, protective clothing and safety eyewear is provided by the supervisor.
  • Employees must use, maintain, and store PPE in accordance with standard operating procedures of their work group and of EHS.
  • Employees are required to report deficiencies in PPE to their supervisor or EHS. Defective PPE must not be used.
