NIH/AAIP Education and Outreach Information and Dissemination Project—Letter of Invitation

Hello, my name is Melanie Johnson and I am the Education Outreach/Dissemination Specialist developed by the Association of American Indian Physicians and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The program will focus on recruiting outstanding American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) students to engage in research opportunities at NIH, the nation's premiere biomedical research institute.

Through this program, AI/AN undergraduate student populations will be made aware of the NIH Undergraduate Scholarship Program, which offers a Summer Academy and various internships to undergraduate students from disadvantaged backgrounds who commit to careers in biomedical research.

The NIH Loan Repayment Program offers educational loan repayment assistance including employment with full salary to AI/AN medical student graduates.

Students who participate in the program will work with leading scientists in a state of the art setting located in Bethesda, Maryland. Information will be disseminated to students throughout the United States and Alaska through various AAIP events and national AI/AN conferences and activities.

Representatives from the National Institute of Health will be exhibiting and presenting at the AAIP 33rd Annual Meeting in Tulsa July 27 - August 1, 2004. Dr. Alfred Johnson, Ph. D. Director of Scientific and Program Operations will be giving a presentation at the Pre-Admission Workshop to be held in conjunction with the Annual Meeting on July 26-27, 2004. Go to www.aaip.com to download an application.

I encourage you to take advantage of this special program to engage in research endeavors relating to the goal of disease prevention and health promotion in American Indian and Alaska Native communities. If you have already attended a Pre-Admission Workshop you are not eligible for this workshop however you can apply for the NIDDK-National Institute of Diabetes & Digestive Diseases or the Spirit of Eagles-May Clinic.

Please feel free to contact me at the Association of American Indian Physicians for any questions you may have. I will be pleased to assist in the application process, working closely with our partners at the National Institutes of Health.

Sincerely,

Melanie Johnson, M.Ed. (Sac and Fox)
