NIH Entrance Hours

New security measures are in place on the NIH campus.

If you are arriving on the weekend or after 7 p.m. on a weekday, you will need to enter via the entrance on Rockville Pike/Rte. 355. After heading south on Rt. 355, continue to the fifth traffic light and take a right onto South Drive, then follow the signs to the appropriate parking area. Due to increased security at NIH, you can expect your vehicle to be searched upon entrance and possibly again if you are parking in an underground garage. We appreciate your patience with these security precautions and ask that you arrive a few minutes earlier to accommodate any minor delays.

Parking Information

Visitor Parking is extremely difficult to find at NIH, so if at all possible, take public transportation. There is a Metro station on the NIH campus with shuttle bus service to the main buildings. Short-term, metered parking and long term, attendant-controlled parking are available to visitors at a cost of $2 per hour for the first three hours or $12 per day.

Taking the Metrorail

Take Metro's Red Line to the Medical Center Station. The station's escalators come out onto the NIH campus. To get to Building 40, go to the last bus shelter to take the NIH campus shuttle bus, which provides free service to Building 40 and stops at the Metro station every 15 to 20 minutes, OR walk from the top of the escalators past the bus shelters, down South Drive. Keep straight and cross over Center Drive and Memorial Drive. Turn left on Service Road West. Turn right on Lincoln Drive. Turn right on Convent Drive. At the 1st stop sign, Building 40 is on your left. Cross over Convent Drive and make a right into the main entrance of Building 40.
