Editorial: Transparency, yes, bring it on

Muskogee Phoenix

September 9, 2006

Congratulations to Sen. Tom Coburn, who, along with other senators, succeeded in getting a transparency and accountability act for congressional spending passed in the U.S. Senate.

The federal budget is not always easy to track for the average citizen, much less the watch dog groups that try to make that information available to the public.

But Coburn’s idea was to allow greater public scrutiny through a searchable Internet site of the budget with the hopes that wasteful spending would be curtailed, especially in the areas of grants, contracts, earmarks and loans. Coburn was supported mainly by Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.

The bill had been secretly blocked last month.

The final form of the act must be worked out with the House, which passed an alternate version of the act earlier this summer.
