Biography

After obtaining her B.S. degree in chemistry and biology at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky, Dr. Cmarik went on to earn her Ph.D. in biochemistry from Vanderbilt University in 1991. She carried out her graduate work on the formation and mutagenicity of DNA adducts in the laboratory of Dr. F. Peter Guengerich in the Center for Molecular Toxicology. She then came to the NCI-Frederick as a postdoctoral researcher in the laboratory of Dr. Nancy Colburn, where she identified Pdcd4 and other candidate tumor suppressors using an in vitro model of the promotion phase of skin carcinogenesis. After spending two years supporting the Breast Cancer Research Program of the Department of Defense Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs, she returned to biomedical research at the NCI-Frederick, joining the Retroviral Molecular Pathogenesis Section, headed by Dr. Sandra Ruscetti, as a staff scientist in 2002. In 2006, Dr. Cmarik was a recipient of the National Cancer Institute Director's Intramural Innovation Award.
