Viral Infections

NIAID supports a broad spectrum of both basic and applied research in virology to expand our knowledge of the biology, pathogenesis and immunology of viral diseases and lead to prevention, control, and treatment. Research includes:

  • viral replication cycle;
  • structure and function of viral components;
  • host-viral interactions including pathogenesis, immune evasion and immune enhancement;
  • viral genetics and evolution;
  • viral interference and defective interfering particles;
  • virus-vector relationships;
  • epidemiology and natural history; and
  • preclinical and clinical research for the development of vaccines, adjuvants, therapeutics, immunomodulators, and diagnostics.
