Extraordinary Opportunities for Early Cancer Detection and Risk Assessment Research
Trends in Early Detection Research
Detection is a dynamic process driven on the one hand by continuous advances in the biology of carcinogenesis and, on the other hand, by the availability of technologies. At the molecular level, the detection of early cancer will require a better understanding of: 1) the evolution of preneoplastic lesions and associated molecular and genetic changes; 2) the evaluation and development of detection technologies suited to preneoplastic lesions; and eventually, 3) the identification of translational research to accelerate the identification of cancer at the earliest stage. There is a need to rapidly identify gene deletions, gene amplifications, and/or expression patterns in pre-malignant lesions and early cancers so that chemoprevention can be more appropriately targeted. Therefore, it is important to develop a cohesive, integrated research agenda to promote translational research in clinical settings.
