NIDDK Defining the Urologic Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndromes - June 16 - 17, 2008
Home Registration Logistics Agenda NIDDK Defining the Urologic Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndromes - June 16 - 17, 2008

DRAFT AGENDA

Purpose:  The purpose of this symposium is to assemble a international group of experts in urology, gastroenterology, internal medicine, rheumatology, epidemiology, behavioral science, and other disciplines with a goal to recharacterize the two most common urologic chronic pelvic pain syndromes, interstitial cystitis (IC) and chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS).  This recharacterization will be utilized in future research studies to better define the clinical and other characteristics (phenotype) of men and women afflicted with these syndromes.  It is anticipated that the “definition” established at this meeting will be modified as additional information is obtained to provide evidence upon which to base change.

Meeting Format:  Each session will include speakers who will address a specific topic, “A Question for the Panel” to stimulate an informed discussion by panel members, and interactive discussion among all attendees.  The interactive discussion will provide an opportunity to question speakers and panel members.  In addition, there will be Keynote Presentations on topics of interest to attendees but not related directly to the various sessions.  These presentations are designed to provide additional breadth to the meeting.  Discussions and questions will not follow the keynote presentations.

Panel:  The purpose of this multidisciplinary panel is to discuss, delineate, and ascertain all the issues related to understanding the chronic urologic pelvic pain syndromes in a holistic, systematic approach.  Members of the panel are:  Drs. Andrew Avins, Dedra Buchwald, Daniel Clauw, Phil Hanno, Michael Pezzone, Michel Pontari, and Ursula Wesselmann.

Meeting Product:  A general statement will be issued under the names of the Symposium attendees that:

  1. Describes the current knowledge about the relationship between the urologic chronic pelvic pain syndromes and other chronic pain syndromes, including irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and other related disorders.

  2. Recommends the type of clinical, demographic, and other patient-oriented information to be collected in research studies to better characterize patients with urologic chronic pelvic pain syndromes and to advance our understanding of the etiology, risk factors, and distribution of these syndromes and their relationship with other chronic pain syndromes.

  3. Proposes a new “working definition” of urologic chronic pelvic pain syndromes, broad enough to be utilized in a wide range of future research studies.
