Photo: Clinical Center Director John I. Gallin, M.D.The new century signals an extraordinary era with hopeful opportunities for clinical research. As the nation’s headquarters for people-oriented research, the NIH Clinical Center shoulders a special responsibility in the conduct and support of human subject research aimed at the betterment of the nation’s health.

Scientific advancement requires a solid, responsive infrastructure for devising and testing new approaches to treating illness and disability. Patient-volunteers participating in this research deserve the highest quality of care and the best healing environment we can provide.

More than one-quarter million patients from around the globe have participated in clinical research studies at the NIH Clinical Center since the first patients were admitted in 1953. On any given day, more than 1,000 studies are conducted on the intramural campus in Bethesda, MD.

This profile looks at Clinical Center goals and accomplishments in this pivotal time of scientific exploration and medical discoveries.
