Abstract: This brief newsletter article reviews the treatment options for erectile dysfunction (ED). The article begins with an overview of the causes of ED, which can include physical causes such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or cardiovascular conditions and other causes including low levels of sexual desire (libido) or relationship issues. Surgeries to treat certain cancers (including prostate cancer) or drug side effects can also affect erectile function. Treatment can include one of three oral medications: sildenafil (Viagra), vardenafil (Levitra), or tadalafil (Cialis). The author explains how each of these drugs works and how they differ from one another. A final section outlines some of the other, non-drug treatment options for ED, including injectable drugs, vacuum devices, hormone therapy, and penile implants. Readers are encouraged to work closely with their health care provider to find an ED treatment that works for their own individual situation.
