(2001). Chromosome-Specific Single-Locus FISH Probes Allow Anchorage of an 1800-Marker Integrated Radiation-Hybrid/Linkage Map of the Domestic Dog Genome to All Chromosomes. Genome Research 11 (10):1784-1795

This version of the canine genome map, including a total of 1800 markers, fully integrated past versions of the canine linkage and radiation hybrid (RH) maps with the cytogenetic map. A set of chromosome-specific markers, each containing microsatellites, were designed from FISH-mapped cosmid clones. These were mapped on both the meiotic linkage and radiation hybrid maps, thus anchoring linkage and RH groups to all 38 canine autosomes. Here are some characteristics of this map:

Radiation Hybrid Map

  • 1500 markers mapped (1078 microsatellite-based markers, 320 gene-based markers, and 102 chromosome-specific markers from FISH-mapped cosmids)
  • 900 new markers added to the 600 marker data set from Mellersh et. al. 2000
  • RH mapped markers typed on the 118-cell line RHDF5000-2 panel (Vignaux et. al. 1999, Mammalian Genome)
  • RH map computed by Multimap software (Matise et. al. 1994, Nature Genetics) at LOD >= 8.0
  • Average intermarker distance of 1.7 Megabases (17centiRays)

Meiotic Linkage Map

  • 354 markers mapped (chromosome-specific microsatellite markers added to the Werner et. al. 1999 dataset)
  • Markers genotyped on panel that includes the Cornell Canine Reference Families
  • Meiotic linkage map computed by Multimap software (see above reference) at LOD >= 5.0
  • Average intermarker distance of approximately 9Mb (9centiMorgans) - Same as Werner et. al. 1999

Integrated Map

  • 102 markers common to the cytogenetic and RH maps
  • 251 markers common to the RH and meiotic linkage maps
  • 52 markers common to the cytogenetic and meiotic linkage maps
  • >90% of the canine genome is covered
