Abstract: This book presents an up-to-date survey of the current scientific understanding of obesity and the metabolic syndrome, as well as an overview of the most significant changes in the field in the past 30 years. In the introduction, the author briefly considers the historical perspective of obesity and focuses on the potential role of cost and availability of different types of foods and their impact on obesity. The book then offers 11 chapters that cover: definitions and prevalence; epidemiology and metabolism; costs, pathology, and health risks of obesity and the metabolic syndrome; the natural history of obesity, including differential diagnosis, clinical types, and age-related changes; patient evaluation, prevention, and introduction to treatment; diet; behavior modification; physical activity and exercise in the obese; pharmacological treatment of the overweight patient; treatments for the whole metabolic syndrome or its components; and surgical treatment for the overweight patient. Each chapter includes an outline, figures and tables, and concludes with an extensive list of references. A subject index concludes the volume.
