Abstract: Physicians who manage patients with diabetes should have a basic understanding of behavioral interventions as they relate to diabetes management. Successful long-term diabetes self-management requires the integration of pharmacotherapy, proper nutrition, home blood glucose monitoring, continuing patient education, an increase in physical activity, and surveillance for and prevention of complications. This chapter about lifestyle interventions for patients with diabetes is from a textbook that offers primary care physicians evidence-based guidelines for evaluating and treating all patients with diabetes. In this chapter, the author discusses how to improve adherence to diabetes self-management strategies, patient noncompliance versus nonadherence, ways to delegate patient care responsibilities, medical nutrition therapy (MNT) and how to discuss MNT with patients, the diabetes food pyramid, the exercise prescription for diabetes, travel tips for patients with diabetes, and the role of self blood glucose monitoring (SMBG). The chapter includes a list of “take-home points” that summarize the concepts discussed, as well as case reports that illustrate the topics covered. 5 figures. 14 tables. 59 references.
