| Abstract: | Physical activity has the potential to prevent or delay progression to type 2 diabetes in many individuals. This chapter is from a book that provides a practical, comprehensive guide to diabetes and exercise for health care professionals involved in patient care. In this chapter, the authors consider the epidemiological evidence across ethnicity and race regarding physical activity in the prevention of type 2 diabetes. The level of physical activity recommended is relatively feasible for individuals of all ages, income groups, races, and ethnic backgrounds. The major thrust of these recommendations is to encourage sedentary individuals to increase their levels of moderate physical activity, such as walking, for 20 to 30 minutes throughout the day (on most days of the week). Physical activity that is incorporated into an individual's lifestyle has the potential for being maintained over the years, and maintenance of adequate physical activity levels appear to be necessary to exert a lasting impact on type 2 diabetes. 1 figure. 19 references. |
