Insulin Receptor / Structure / Function / Action
The Insulin Receptor/Structure/Function/Action Program encompasses studies of the Insulin Receptor in health and disease. Specific areas of support include;
- molecular analysis of ligand binding to receptor;
- activation of the tyrosine kinase;
- the insulin receptor as a relay platform for signals involved in insulin action;
- the Insulin Receptor Signaling proteins ((IRS)-1,2,3,4) and other proteins containing Src Homology Domains that participate in signaling downstream of the insulin receptor; and
- glucose transport, including kinetics, regulation, and structure of transport proteins in muscle, liver, heart, gut, pancreas, and kidney, and regulation of glucose transporter (GLUT) storage, translocation and gene expression by hormones, diet, and metabolic state (including fasting, obesity).
- kinetic and structural studies of transporters and/or membrane channels of nutrients other than glucose. These may include amino acids, ions and metals.
