NIDA Grant Announcements
NIDA has issued two new program announcements seeking proposals to study
drug use, sexual risk behaviors, and HIV in men; and to conduct research
on the health consequences of drug abuse.
Research grant applications are due on February 1, June 1, and October
1 each year. Deadlines for AIDS-related grant applications are January
2, May 1, and September 1 each year.

Drug Use, Sexual Risk Behaviors, and HIV in Men (PA 96-074)
NIDA currently is supporting epidemiologic and HIV prevention studies
on an especially high risk group: drug-using men who have sex with men
(DU MSM). This announcement seeks to stimulate research on the interrelationship
of HIV risk behaviors among DU MSM; causes and corresponding patterns of
high risk; the efficacy and effectiveness of behavioral and biological HIV
prevention interventions for diverse groups of DU MSM; and development and
evaluation of new behavioral therapies, drug abuse treatment approaches,
health services, and health care services delivery to DU MSM.

Medical and Health Consequences of Drug Abuse (PA 96-010)
Drug abuse and drug-abusing behaviors have been linked to medical problems
including infectious diseases, pulmonary disease, cardiac failure, and mental
disorders.
NIDA is encouraging a wide range of studies on the factors, processes,
and mechanisms associated with the onset, duration, clinical manifestations,
and treatment of the mental and physical health consequences of drug use.
Research may include general population-based, clinical epidemi-ologic,
clinical, and laboratory studies addressing the morbidity and mortality
of drug abuse. Parallel animal and human studies are encouraged.
