NIDA Grant Announcements

NIDA has issued two new program announcements seeking research on preclinical methods to identify medications to treat cocaine and opiate abuse and on studies of drug abuse and linked medical care. These announcements are summarized below.

Research grant applications are due on February 1, June 1, and October 1 of each year. Deadlines for AIDS-related grant applications are January 2, May 1, and September 1 of each year. Information on programmatic issues may be obtained from the contact person listed with each announcement. Copies of program announcements and information regarding fiscal issues may be obtained from

Studies on the Linkage Of Drug Abuse Treatment and Medical Care

(PA-95-027)

The separation of the drug abuse treatment and primary medical care systems has resulted in difficulties related to providing the combination of effective services required to address the needs of drug abusers and the public health problem of associated infectious illnesses such as AIDS. NIDA is calling for research on models and strategies for linking drug abuse treatment with medical care, with special attention to effects on the prevention, incidence, and progression of medical (including mental) disorders in drug-abusing populations and the cost and effectiveness of linked treatment.

Innovative Methods for Screening Drugs to Treat Cocaine and Opiate Abuse

(PA 95-008)

NIDA is encouraging research to develop innovative preclinical methods and models that would identify treatment agents for the entire spectrum of cocaine and opiate abuse, from pre-addiction through abstinence, relapse, and recovery. Several preclinical models of drug abuse, such as the animal self-administration and animal drug discrimination models, have been useful laboratory methodologies. However, animal models to study multiple phases of cocaine or opiate abuse have not been well developed. This has hampered the identification and development of potential new medications to treat abuse of these substances. Development of additional animal models could further help in identifying and developing medications to treat cocaine and opioid abuse.

Methods may be based on behavioral, neurophysiologic, neurochemical, or other approaches as long as a strong case is made that they will be relevant to pharmacologic treatment of human cocaine and opioid abuse.

Methods should be novel or should significantly expand undeveloped or unrecognized methods and models.
