Conference Grant Support : NIDDK

Conference Grant Support

Conference Grant, Traditional (R13)

Conference Grants are awarded to institutions and organizations (not individuals) to provide partial support for international or domestic meetings, conferences, and workshops to coordinate, exchange, and disseminate research information. Please see PA-06-041. NIDDK is especially interested in conference grants used to cover travel expenses for young and minority investigators, although meeting publications, salaries, consultant services, equipment rental, and supplies may be requested. Indirect costs normally are not allowed.

Guidelines for R13 application to the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)

To assist NIDDK staff in assessing programmatic relevance of proposed conferences and workshops, potential applicants should submit a letter of intent that addresses the criteria and other elements specified below. NIDDK considers the primary role of NIH funding for these conferences to support the travel of junior investigators to outstanding meetings.

Criteria to establish programmatic relevance include the following:

  1. Conference covers a topic that has high program relevance - generally, NIDDK issues should be the primary theme of the meeting.
  2. Conference brings together populations of investigators that should benefit from cross-talk but do not typically interact.
  3. NIH funds for conference meet a critical need not met by societies or industry.
  4. Conference topic has not been covered by other conferences in past year.
  5. Conference addresses current, cutting edge research topics.
  6. Conference provides excellent training environment for NIDDK junior investigators.

Applicants must submit a letter of intent to apply at least 8 weeks before the application receipt date. This letter should include the names of the organizing committee, a preliminary agenda, a list of accepted or invited speakers, a proposed budget and other planned sources of funding, and a description of how the conference will address each of the above criteria.

NOTICE OF CHANGE IN PROCEDURE: On January 15, the President signed H.R. 6164 as P.L. 109-482, the National Institutes of Health Reform Act of 2006, affirming the importance of NIH and its vital role in advancing biomedical research to improve the health of the Nation (see NIH Reauthorization). The new law requires Advisory Council action on all peer reviewed grant applications before they can be considered for funding, regardless of the amount requested (previously those grant applications requesting less than $50,000 did not required Advisory Council action). The details regarding how NIH and NIDDK will implement this new requirement have not yet been fully decided. Given theses changes, before developing and/or submitting an R13 application it is imperative that applicants speak with one of the Institute contacts below.

Conference Cooperative Agreement (U13)

The Conference Cooperative Agreement is a relatively new mechanism that allows NIDDK staff to play a substantial role in planning and conducting meetings, conferences, and workshops sponsored by other institutions or organizations. Refer to "Conference Grant" above for more information on costs that may be covered by this award.
