The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) intends to issue two Requests for Applications (RFA) in the fall/winter of 2007 for the purposes of advancing the development of medical countermeasures against chemical threats. The NIH has developed a comprehensive CounterACT Research Network that includes Research Centers of Excellence, individual U01 research projects, SBIRs, contracts and other programs (see http://www.ninds.nih.gov/funding/research/counterterrorism/index.htm ).
The first RFA will be for three-year cooperative agreements (U01s) to conduct advanced development research on therapeutics. Four to six awards are anticipated, each with a direct costs allowance of $500,000 per year. Research on sulfur mustard will not be supported by this RFA, nor will studies on pre-exposure (prophylactic) treatments or diagnostic technologies.
The second RFA will be a limited solicitation for applications to form Research Centers of Excellence from within the CounterACT Network. It is anticipated that one to three newly formed Centers will be funded for three years, each with a direct costs allowance of $500,000 per year. Research on sulfur mustard will not be supported by this RFA.
