Evaluation Branch (EB)

Welcome to the Evaluation Branch

Introduction

The NIH Evaluation Branch (EB) is located within the Office of the NIH Director.

Mission

The mission of the EB is to improve NIH program efficiency, effectiveness and goal attainment by evaluating NIH-wide programs, key initiatives, and strategic objectives; by tracking outcomes and recommendations; and by maximizing the effective use of the NIH Evaluation Set-Aside Program.

Approach

We accomplish this mission in several ways:

  • Administering the Evaluation Set-Aside Program, which provides dedicated funding for NIH evaluations.
  • Providing hands-on technical support and online guidance to applicants.
  • Managing two trans-NIH committees which provide peer review.
  • Reporting evaluation results.

Evaluation at NIH

The EB serves as the hub of a broad evaluation community at NIH, consisting of Planning and Evaluation officers from across the ICs and OD offices. While the EB administers Evaluation Set-Aside funding to support numerous evaluations of NIH programs, individual ICs or OD offices also fund their own formal and informal evaluations. The evaluation community at NIH stays informed and connected through the Program Evaluation Special Interest Group.
